Introduction to Harry Potter

J.K. Rowling's, the author of Harry Potter, is a graduate of Exeter University and a teacher. She was unemployed and a single parent when she wrote, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone. You could say Harry Potter rescued her! She was given a grant by the Scottish Arts Council to finish her book. "I was very low and without the challenge, I would have gone stark raving mad", says J.K. Rowlings. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was sold to Bloomsbury, in the United Kingdom and Scholastic Books. With great reviews, Harry Potter won The British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year and the Smarties Prize.

Harry Potter is a fictionalized re-telling of the early life of wizard Harry Potter. His parents, James and Lily, were killed while trying to protect him, by Lord Voldemort. After his parents were killed Harry was rescued and taken to live with his only living relatives, the Dursley's. The Dursley's were totally against magic and wizardry and kept Harry's past a secret. When Harry turned 11, the Hogwarts gamekeeper told him everything that had happened. Today Harry attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the school of his parents.

Rowling's next book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and her third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, are done in series. Harry Potter and the Doomspell Tournament is her fourth book. There will be seven Harry Potter books, one for every year at Hogwarts, which means Harry will be 17 years old in the last book. They will come out about once a year
